White wine, red wine, rosé wine, sparkling wine (Crémants de Bourgogne)...
All Burgundy appellations are available for purchase, from northern Burgundy (Chablis and Auxerrois) to the south (Mâcon) via the prestigious Côte de Nuits, Côte de Beaune and Côte Chalonnaise.
There are several reasons:
- Burgundy is a very fragmentedwine region. Small plots are more difficult to work with. Moreover, the number of appellations in Burgundy is more than 100, while it is a region thatproduces only 4% of French wine.
- The number of small producers is large (about 4000), the average size of a farm is 10 hectares. Of course, it is more difficult to make economies of scale by having a small operation.
- There is a strong enthusiasm for Burgundy at the international level, while production is quite low in volume. This is particularly the case for large vintages (1% of production), whose plots are sometimes only a few hectares (1.8 hectares for example for the famous Romanée Conti).
- The last few years have been small in harvest quantities (particularly due to hail and spring frosts), exacerbating the shortage, while demand remains strong, especially at the global level.
