The vineyards of the Beaujolais spans 17 324 hectares and runs along a ribbon of 10 to 15 kilometres wide and 50 kilometres long, from Mâcon to Lyon, on the slopes of hilly monts du Beaujolais.

The Beaujolais has 3 levels of appellations : Beaujolais, Beaujolais Village and Beaujolais Crus, the number of 10 : which are from north to south : saint-amour, the juliénas, the chénas, moulin-à-vent, the flowers, the chiroubles, morgon, the régnié, the brouilly and the côte-de-brouilly.
Unlike the Bourgogne, the grape used for the red wines is not the Pinot noir But the Gamay noir, much more adapted to the soil mainly granite of Beaujolais.
