The Beaujolais vineyard covers 17,324 hectares and runs along a ribbon 10 to 15 kilometres wide and 50 kilometres long, from Mâcon to Lyon, on the hilly slopes of the Beaujolais mountains.

Beaujolais has 3 levels of appellations: Beaujolais, Beaujolais Village and the Crus du Beaujolais, of which there are 10: which are from north to south: the saint-amour, the juliénas, the chénas, the moulin-à-vent, the fleurie, the chiroubles, the morgon, the régnié, the brouilly and the côte-de-brouilly.
Unlike Burgundy, the grape variety used for red wines is not Pinot but Gamay noir, much more suitable for the mainly granite soils of Beaujolais.
